Residence through a Trade Representative Office of a foreign company

One of the most commonly used routes to residence in Bulgaria for non-EU nationals is registering a Trade Representative Office of a foreign company with the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The regime combines a business presence with a legal status.

What a Trade Representative Office is

A Trade Representative Office is a form through which a foreign company can maintain a presence in Bulgaria — without setting up a separate legal entity and without carrying out independent commercial activity on the local market.

Why it is a popular residence route

  • no requirement to hire Bulgarian staff;
  • no requirement to start commercial activity in Bulgaria;
  • suitable for business owners, entrepreneurs and managers;
  • up to two representatives may obtain residence permits, each of whom may bring family members (spouse and children under 18);
  • the permit is usually for 12 months and can be renewed annually.

Conditions for the foreign company

The foreign company must demonstrate economic activity and a certain annual turnover during the preceding two years, supported by financial documents. A notarised power of attorney, a notarised specimen of the manager's signature and a certificate of no tax liabilities are also required.

The procedure in outline

The first step is the registration of the office with the BCCI (two to three weeks). The representative then applies for a Visa D at a Bulgarian consulate and subsequently for a residence permit with the Migration Directorate in Bulgaria. The residence permit is issued within the statutory time limit after filing.

Points to keep in mind

The Trade Representative Office is not a direct path to permanent residence — it is an extended status with annual renewal. The company also needs a real turnover and a stable track record to justify the need for representation in Bulgaria.
